Nestled within the vibrant landscape of Los Angeles, California, this project began with the decision of our valued clients—whom we have had the pleasure of working with before—to construct an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in the backyard of their existing home. This creative initiative utilizes 270 sq ft of garden space to provide a separate living area, perfect for both daily use and visiting guests.
We set out to design this additional area to give a feeling of spaciousness and comfort, all within the budget determined by our customers. The challenge was to include a bathroom, bedroom, living area, and fully equipped kitchen within the compact 270 sq ft space.
Our first steps involved researching and mastering local building regulations and virtually meeting with local vendors to collaborate effectively. The layout was meticulously planned to maximize space efficiency, with careful consideration of the functionality and aesthetic appeal of each element. We chose a Murphy bed to optimize space, offering versatility as both a sleeping area and a sitting area during the day.
When determining the concept and selecting materials, we focused on the climatic conditions of Los Angeles, the need for a sense of spaciousness and warmth, and the timelessness of the design. These considerations guided every decision, ensuring that the final result was both practical and beautiful.
It was a very enjoyable experience for us to design an ADU project, make it most useful with creative solutions in a small area, and logistically plan the design process in a completely different city, even though it was remote. When we contacted our clients one year after completing the project, it was a great pleasure to hear that everything was fine and that they were enjoying their new living space!
